Apple earnings reaction: Apple beat on fiscal fourth-quarter sales and profit, but guided its holiday-quarter gross margin to 45% to 46%, below what analysts expected, on rising memory costs. The stock opened about 3.8% lower, inside the roughly 4.2% move options had priced, and was about 2.4% lower at 10:30 AM ET.

The move vs what options priced
Before the report, the options market priced a move of about ±4.2% (earnings-watcher, as of Oct 30; TokenPost had ±4.3%). That is the swing traders were paying for, in either direction.
- Monday close: $338.32
- The open: about $325.5, a gap of about −3.8%. That is about 90% of the implied move, so inside it.
- First hour: low $325.33 near the bell, high $334.50, then about $330.40 (−2.4%) at 10:30 AM ET.
- Volume: about 22 million shares by 10:30 AM ET, against an average full day of about 40 million (Nasdaq.com).
Buyers took back nearly 40% of the gap in the first hour. A gap that lands inside the implied move usually means the news was roughly priced in, so the open is less important than what price does at the nearest Zone. We cover that idea in how to trade earnings season.

What the gap did at the Zone
Zones are areas where price reacted before, places to watch for a reaction, not entries. We read three off the daily chart (see support and resistance trading for the method):
- 333.5–334.5: the 50-day moving average (about $334 per Finviz) and the first-hour high.
- 330–331: the October lows ($330.61 on Oct 2, $330.62 on Oct 6, $330.70 on Oct 9).
- 325–326: the Oct 1 low ($325.81) and today’s open.
Apple opened under the 330–331 Zone and held 325–326 at the bell. It climbed back above 330–331 in about 15 minutes, ran into the 50-day average near 334 and stalled (more on that line in moving averages explained). By 10:30 AM ET it was back sitting on 330–331. There was a reaction at both ends; confirmation in either direction has not come yet.
What Apple reported
Fiscal fourth quarter, ended September 26, 2026 (Apple release and financial statements):
- Revenue $114.5 billion, up 12%, vs about $113.4 billion expected (FactSet via Euronews; Tradingpedia, MoneyCheck). A September-quarter record.
- Diluted EPS $2.10, up 14%, vs $1.99 expected (FactSet; LSEG via MoneyCheck). It includes about $0.05 from tariff refunds.
- Gross margin 47.9%, including about 1 point from tariff refunds.
- iPhone $57.6 billion (+17%), Mac $10.8 billion (+24%), Services $31.6 billion (+10%), iPad $6.2 billion (−10%), Wearables, Home and Accessories $8.3 billion (−8%).
- Greater China $17.5 billion, up 21%, but short of the roughly $18.5 billion analysts expected.
- Fiscal 2026 revenue: a record $479 billion.

Guidance vs consensus
Apple gives its outlook on the earnings call, not in the release. For the December quarter:
- Revenue growth 7% to 10% from a year ago, vs about 6% expected (5.9% FactSet per TradingKey; 6.1% per Euronews and MoneyCheck). Above.
- Gross margin 45% to 46%, vs about 46.3% (Euronews, MoneyCheck) to about 47% (Bloomberg estimate via TradingKey). Below.
- Services growth 8% to 9%.
CEO John Ternus put the reason plainly on the call: “For the December quarter, we expect even higher memory costs.” So the market heard two things at once: a bigger holiday quarter in sales, and less profit kept from each dollar.

What it teaches
Headline beats did not decide this open; the margin outlook did. When the gap stays inside the implied move, the first hour is about Zones, not the headline. Mark the Zone, wait for a reaction, and let confirmation come to you. For how we prepared for this morning, see the Nov 3 premarket brief, and for the day before, the Nov 2 close recap.

The implied move is the size of the price swing the options market is pricing for an event like earnings, in either direction. Comparing the real gap with it shows whether the news was a surprise or roughly priced in.
