Rare Earth Magnet Stocks: The Choke Point Behind AI Robotics

MTC Investing Analyst · Weekly Report · Sep 18, 2026

The Fed just hiked for the first time since 2023 and the 10-year touched 5%. That is the headline everyone is trading. The quieter, more durable story is the one we trace this week: rare earth magnet stocks and the supply choke point sitting under AI robotics, defense and every EV motor. China controls roughly 90% of rare-earth magnet processing — and for the first time, the U.S. government is paying to break that grip.

Every hot name has a supply chain, and the boring company three layers down often has better margins and more room to run. The Fed just told you the easy-money tailwind is gone. So this week we study the physical bottleneck, not the multiple.

The Fed Hiked — But That’s Not This Week’s Story

The FOMC raised rates 25bps to 3.75%–4.00% in a unanimous vote — its first hike since 2023 — and the dot plot now shows 16 of 19 members expecting at least one more hike this year. The 10-year Treasury yield pushed to ~5.0%, gold held near record highs around $4,416/oz, and small caps (Russell 2000 -1.5%) took the hit a hawkish Fed always delivers. A 5% risk-free rate is a wrecking ball for expensive, no-profit growth and a gift to anything with real assets, real yield, or real cash today.

Environment Label

High-Rate-Pressure + Sticky Inflation. Money costs more again. That pressures long-duration growth and rate-sensitive small caps, and puts the focus on businesses with real cash flow and real assets. This week we study one of those: a physical bottleneck. Our guide to reading market breadth shows how to check what the index alone won’t tell you.

Rare Earth Magnet Stocks: The Choke Point Nobody Owns

Everyone can name the buyers: Apple, Tesla, Lockheed, every humanoid-robot startup. Almost nobody owns the layer that decides whether those products get built — the companies that mine, separate, and sinter rare-earth permanent magnets outside China. The crowd chases the robot. The edge is in the magnet. Here are three verified names doing the work, each with a demand link you can trace to a named customer or contract.

MP · Mine-to-Magnet

MP Materials — the one with a government price floor

MP owns Mountain Pass, the only integrated rare-earth mine in the U.S., and is building the “10X” magnet plant in Texas targeting 10,000 tonnes of NdFeB magnet capacity. It’s the closest thing to a pure-play on U.S. magnet independence — and it’s been de-risked by Washington itself.

Verified demand link: In 2025 the Department of Defense took a ~15% stake (largest shareholder), set a $110/kg floor price for NdPr oxide, and committed to buy 100% of the 10X plant’s magnet output for at least 10 years. Apple separately signed a $500M recycled-magnet deal, shipments starting 2027.
The risk: NdPr prices can still be pressured below the floor’s reach; the 10X ramp is capital-intensive and could dilute; the stock round-tripped from ~$98 to the mid-$40s, so momentum is broken even if the thesis isn’t.
USAR · Magnet Making

USA Rare Earth — the magnet line that just switched on

USAR is building the finished-magnet layer most investors skip: a 310,000 sq-ft plant in Stillwater, Oklahoma making sintered NdFeB permanent magnets. Small and pre-scale — exactly the kind of under-covered name the crowd ignores until revenue shows up.

Verified demand link: Phase 1a commercial magnet production was commissioned in Q2 2026, ramping to ~600 t/yr by Q4 2026 and doubling to 1,200 t/yr by Q1 2027. Initial sales flow through an offtake agreement with Arnold Magnetic Technologies, serving aerospace, defense, semiconductors and industrial motors.
The risk: pre-profit and pre-scale — the highest-beta name in the group. It needs capital to fund the ramp, and any execution slip hits hard.
UUUU · Oxide Processing

Energy Fuels — the separation step (with a uranium kicker)

Energy Fuels runs the White Mesa mill in Utah — the piece of the chain that turns raw monazite into separated NdPr and heavy rare-earth oxides. Separation is the hardest, most China-dominated step, which makes a Western operator with a working mill scarce. It’s also still a uranium producer, giving it a second hard-asset leg.

Verified demand link: A partnership with POSCO International has Energy Fuels supplying refined NdPr oxide that POSCO turns into magnets for automakers in the U.S., Europe, Korea and Japan, with oxide qualification confirmed. Heavy rare-earth (Dy/Tb) commercial production is targeted for Q4 2026.
The risk: the named offtake is softer than MP’s government-backed contract, timing can slip, and it depends on securing monazite feedstock. Honest caveat: more “capability + qualification” than locked long-term volume today.

What this means

The lesson: the magnet story isn’t really about the robot or the phone. It runs through three verified links that make the robot possible: the miner with a federal price floor (MP), the magnet line coming online (USAR), and the separation mill nobody can easily replace (UUUU). Each one has real demand you can trace.

Key Risks for Next Week

1. The 10-year at 5% — a decisive break higher pressures every risk asset. 2. The next PCE print (near 3.6%) — a hot number cements more hikes. 3. Oil near $95 — the inflation swing factor. 4. Fed-speak — post-meeting commentary can move the curve fast. 5. Rare-earth policy headlines — any new DoD or China trade action re-rates this week’s spotlight, both ways.

The MTC Investing View

The read this week: money costs something again, so the winners shift from “whoever grows fastest” to “whoever owns real cash flow, real yield, or a real physical bottleneck.” The theme worth studying is the magnet choke point — not a rate trade, but a decade-long supply-chain re-shoring the U.S. government is actively funding. If you want to learn how we read the market environment, find the bias, and manage risk yourself, that’s exactly what we teach inside the MTC free education library. Even a strong theme still needs a qualified entry. Our guide to trade qualification shows how we grade a setup before risking money.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are rare earth magnet stocks?

Rare earth magnet stocks are companies that mine, separate, or manufacture the neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) permanent magnets used in EV motors, wind turbines, AI robotics and precision-guided weapons. Because China controls roughly 90% of processing, U.S. names building a domestic supply chain — like MP Materials (MP), USA Rare Earth (USAR) and Energy Fuels (UUUU) — are a strategic, multi-year investment theme.

What makes MP Materials different from other rare-earth stocks?

MP Materials is the only fully integrated U.S. rare-earth producer, with a Department of Defense $110/kg price floor for NdPr oxide, a 10-year magnet offtake commitment, and a $500M Apple deal. It also carries real risks — NdPr price pressure, capital intensity, and broken momentum after round-tripping from its high. This is education only, not a recommendation; do your own research.

What has tended to hold up when rates rise?

Historically, short-duration Treasuries (yielding ~4%+), dividend-quality equities, defensive sectors like healthcare, and hard assets like gold hold up best when rates rise, while long-duration growth and rate-sensitive small caps struggle.
