The Airbnb earnings reaction vs what options priced

Before the report, one options tracker, Earnings-Watcher, had priced a move of about ±7.1% (a single source; the same site shows 8.0% in another box). That is the swing traders were paying for, in either direction.

  • Thursday close: $170.13 (Nasdaq.com, Finviz).
  • After hours: about +12% right after the release (StockStory); about $189.18, +11.9%, at about 4:30 PM ET Nov 5 (Finviz).
  • The open: about $189.56, a gap of about +11.4%, larger than the implied move.
  • Premarket high: about $195.99 at 8:05 AM ET (+15.2%), then about $191.01 at 9:29 AM (Nasdaq.com).
  • Session so far: high about $192.50 (+13.1%), low about $184.09 (+8.2%), about $185.89 (+9.3%) at 10:25 AM ET.
  • Volume: about 3.5 million shares by 10:25 AM ET against an average of about 4.2 million a day (Nasdaq.com).

A gap past the implied move is the market saying the news was bigger than priced, but it still has to hold; we cover the idea in how to trade earnings season.

What the gap did at the Zones

Zones are areas where price reacted before, places to watch for a reaction, not entries. We read three off the daily bars (see support and resistance trading for the method):

  • 176–180: the Nov 4 close ($176.37) and high ($180.06); the Oct 20 close was $176.94.
  • 170–171: Thursday’s close ($170.13), the Nov 2 close ($171.11) and the Oct 26 close ($171.05).
  • 166–167: the Nov 3 close ($166.96) and the lows of Nov 3 ($166.70) and Nov 5 ($166.67).

ABNB opened about $189.56, above all three Zones, and the session low of about $184.09 never got back to 176–180. Above it, the $193.45 52-week high held the session: the high of about $192.50 stayed under it, although the premarket traded above it. There was no reaction at a Zone to read, because price never came back to one. The stock was also about 8% above its 20-day, 10% above its 50-day and 26% above its 200-day average (Finviz; see moving averages explained). The range so far, about $184.09 to $192.50, is the box to watch.

Guidance

  • Q4 2026 revenue $3.22 billion to $3.28 billion, up 16% to 18%, including about two points of currency tailwind. Gross booking value growth in the mid-teens.
  • Q4 Adjusted EBITDA to grow, with the margin down slightly from Q4 2025, partly on the timing of marketing spend.
  • Full-year 2026: revenue growth now in the high teens and Adjusted EBITDA margin now about 36%; Airbnb raised both.
  • The company said it is “closely monitoring ongoing developments in EMEA”, while underlying global travel demand remains healthy (8-K).

We left out a verdict on the Q4 guide against analyst estimates: we could not confirm a Q4 consensus from two sources.

What it teaches

A beat and raise can still gap well beyond the implied move, and what matters next is where price settles against the Zones. Here the gap opened above every Zone we had marked, and the first hour faded from the premarket high without coming back to one, so the question was about holding the gain, not about a Zone reaction. Mark the Zones above, wait for price to reach one, and let confirmation come to you. For how we prepared for this morning, see the Nov 6 premarket brief, and for yesterday’s session, the Nov 5 close recap.

No alignment, no trade.

FAQ

Why did Airbnb stock jump after earnings?

Airbnb reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of $4.87 billion, up 19%, and GAAP EPS of $3.16 against about $2.85 expected, with nights and seats booked up 16% (up from 10% in Q2), and it raised its full-year revenue growth and Adjusted EBITDA margin outlook (8-K). How much did options expect Airbnb to move on earnings?

One tracker, Earnings-Watcher, put the options-implied move at about 7.1% in either direction (single source). ABNB opened about 11.4% above Thursday’s close, a gap bigger than that implied move.

What was Airbnb’s guidance for the fourth quarter?

Airbnb guided Q4 2026 revenue to $3.22 billion to $3.28 billion, up 16% to 18% from a year ago, with gross booking value growth in the mid-teens. It expects Adjusted EBITDA margin to be down slightly from Q4 2025, partly on the timing of marketing spend (8-K).

What is an implied move?

The implied move is the size of the price swing the options market is pricing for an event like earnings, in either direction. Comparing the real move with it shows whether the news was a surprise or roughly priced in.
