Stock Market Today: Banks Lift Dow, Chips Drag Nasdaq

Stock market today: banks lift the Dow while chips drag the Nasdaq into CPI

The stock market today opens split down the middle, and the split is the story. Q3 earnings season kicks off with the big banks: Goldman Sachs popped about 3.6%, UnitedHealth jumped about 3% on a clean beat, JPMorgan rose even as EPS missed, and Citigroup slipped despite beating. Meanwhile the AI chips are heavy again — Nvidia, Broadcom and Marvell all lower. The Dow wants up, the Nasdaq wants down.

The reactions are the lesson: a miss that rallies and a beat that sells off both say the same thing — price is the truth, not the headline. With September CPI tomorrow, today is a rotation day between banks and chips. Here is how to read it and the SPX levels that frame the week.

Where the market stands today

Index performance: Dow higher, Nasdaq lower, S&P 500 flat

Monday closed mixed and set up today’s split. The S&P 500 slipped 0.06% to 7,807.24, holding just under its record, while the Dow rose 0.38% to 51,850.55 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.44% to 27,245.90, dragged by a 3.9% drop in Micron on fresh Chinese memory competition. This morning Dow futures are up about 0.4% on strong financials, S&P 500 futures are roughly flat, and Nasdaq-100 futures are down about 0.5% as the AI chips sell off again.

The numbers that matter

Market snapshot: VIX 15.45, WTI near $92, 10-year yield 5.19%, Bitcoin near $83.7K

The macro backdrop eased a touch: the 10-year yield slipped to about 5.19%, WTI sits near $92, the VIX is 15.45 and firming into tomorrow’s inflation print, and Bitcoin holds near $83,700. The market is really trading two questions at once — can the banks carry the Dow, and will the chips drag the Nasdaq into the CPI number.

Bank earnings: the reaction is the lesson

The bank scorecard was mixed, but the tell was clean. Goldman Sachs popped about 3.6% on strong results and UnitedHealth jumped about 3% on a clean beat. JPMorgan rose about 1% even though its EPS of $5.57 missed the $5.90 estimate, and Citigroup slipped despite beating. That is the whole session in one line: the reaction at the level matters more than the raw print. When a beat sells off and a miss rallies, the market is telling you where positioning and expectations really sat.

The chips are the drag

AI chip stocks lower: Nvidia, Broadcom and Marvell drag the Nasdaq

Underneath the bank bid, the AI names are heavy again: Nvidia near $224.88 (-0.6%), Broadcom near $351.07 (-1%), and Marvell off about 2.5%, as investors keep questioning whether the pace of AI-infrastructure spending pays off. Watch whether breadth broadens — small caps firming on the easing 10-year — or the chip selloff wins the tape.

The SPX levels I’m watching

7,850 — the extension wall. The level the move has to clear to prove it is trending, not just holding near the highs. Don’t chase into it on a two-sided open; make the market defend 7,800 first and earn 7,850 on real volume once the bank reactions settle.

7,800 — the shelf and the line in the sand. Hold above it on real volume and the record stays alive into CPI; lose it and fail to reclaim and the chip selloff is winning. On a rotation day the index can sit quiet while banks rip and chips slide, so trust a break only with volume behind it.

7,750 — the deeper support. Hold it and a pullback is just a dip inside the uptrend. Lose 7,750 and fail to reclaim, and the read shifts toward 7,700 into CPI — the job turns from catching the breakout to capital preservation.

How I’d actually trade it

At Meta Trading Club we don’t guess direction — we qualify it. Every setup runs through the same six-phase Alignment Engine: Bias → Level → Reaction → Confirmation → Execution → Targets. No alignment, no trade.

Bull case: the rotation proves constructive. The bank and healthcare beats stick, breadth broadens as small caps firm on the easing 10-year near 5.19%, the chips stabilize, SPX defends 7,800, and a cool September CPI lets yields ease — 7,850 comes into play and the record proves it can rotate rather than depend on chips alone.

Bear case: the chip selloff wins. Nvidia, Broadcom and Marvell extend losses, the bank gains fade as the day wears on, SPX loses 7,800 then 7,750, and a hot CPI pushes the 10-year back above 5.24%. A market that can’t hold its shelf on an earnings beat and then meets a hot CPI is a clean short — but it needs 7,800 to break on volume to confirm.

The takeaway is the same every morning: a plan beats a prediction, let the market confirm the move at your level, and favor process over outcome. One clean read won’t make you — a repeatable system will. FAQ

What happened in the stock market today?

Bank earnings opened Q3 season with a split tape: the Dow pushed higher on strong financials — Goldman Sachs up about 3.6% and UnitedHealth about 3% — while the Nasdaq leaned lower as AI chip stocks like Nvidia, Broadcom and Marvell sold off again. It is a rotation day into tomorrow’s September CPI.

Why did JPMorgan rise even though EPS missed?

Because price trades the reaction, not the headline. JPMorgan’s EPS of $5.57 missed the $5.90 estimate, yet the stock rose about 1% — while Citigroup slipped despite beating. A miss that rallies and a beat that sells off tell you the same thing: the market’s reaction at a level is the signal, not the raw number.

What SPX levels matter today?

Watch 7,800 as the shelf the index has to hold to keep the record run valid, 7,850 as the extension wall above, and 7,750 as the deeper support below. On a rotation day, confirm any break with volume rather than chasing a two-sided open.
