What Is Level 2 Market Data? How to Read the Order Book (DOM)

Level 2 shows you the order book — but a wall of size isn’t a promise. It can be pulled in a second. Level 2 is context for your level, never a signal by itself.

When traders graduate from casually watching charts to actively trading intraday, one question shows up almost universally: “What is Level 2, and how do I read it?” It’s the screen that separates the casual investor from the active trader — a live, layered view of buy and sell orders stacked around the current price. It looks like the cockpit of the market. And like a cockpit, it’s useless if you don’t know what the instruments actually mean.

This guide explains what Level 2 market data is, how to read the depth of market (DOM), why the size you see can be deeply misleading, and how professional traders use it as context rather than as a signal.

Read this before you trust a big order

Displayed size is an intention, not a commitment. Orders can be spoofed, iceberged, or pulled the instant price approaches. Level 2 is a map of what’s currently offered — nothing more.

What Is Level 2 Market Data?

Level 2 market data is a real-time view of the order book: the multiple layers of bid (buy) and ask (sell) orders resting at prices above and below the current market. Where Level 1 shows you only the best bid, best ask, and last trade, Level 2 shows you the depth — how much size is waiting at each price level, and how that size is distributed.

Think of it as the difference between knowing the current price of a house and seeing every standing offer from every potential buyer and seller in the neighborhood. Level 1 is the sticker price. Level 2 is the whole negotiation table, laid out in tiers.

The order book has three parts you need to recognize immediately: the asks stacked above the current price (sellers, usually shown in red), the bids stacked below (buyers, usually green), and the inside spread — the gap between the highest bid and the lowest ask, which is the current live market.

The Order Book, Explained

Asks rest above, bids rest below, and the inside spread is the live market. The width of each bar is resting size. Bigger size looks like a wall — but a wall you can’t see behind is not the same as a wall that will hold.

How to Read the Depth of Market (DOM)

Reading the DOM is about relationships, not absolute numbers. You’re looking at how size is distributed and how it changes as price moves. A few things experienced traders watch for:

  • Where size is stacked: heavy resting bids just below price suggest buyers are interested at that level — potential support, if the orders are real.
  • How size behaves as price approaches: does the big bid stay and get filled, or does it vanish the instant price ticks toward it? Real interest gets hit. Fake interest disappears.
  • Refreshing orders: size that keeps replenishing at one price as it’s eaten is a sign of a large participant working an order — genuine absorption.
  • The inside spread: a tight, deep spread means a liquid, orderly market. A wide, thin one means slippage risk and volatility.

The DOM pairs naturally with the tape. Level 2 shows you where size is resting; the time and sales tape shows you whether that size is actually trading. A big bid on Level 2 that never prints on the tape is a bluff. A big bid that keeps absorbing prints is a defended level.

Why Displayed Size Can Lie to You

This is the lesson that costs beginners the most: the size you see on Level 2 is not guaranteed to be there when you need it. Modern markets are full of orders designed to look like something they’re not.

Spoofing — placing large orders with no intent to fill them, just to create a false impression of demand or supply, then canceling — is illegal, but variants of the behavior still shape what you see. Iceberg orders hide their true size, showing only a small tip while a much larger order sits underneath. And perfectly legal algorithmic orders can pull and re-post faster than any human can react. The upshot: a “wall” of 50,000 shares on the ask can evaporate the moment price rises to test it.

This is why “follow the big orders” is not a strategy. Level 2 tells you what’s currently offered, not what will hold. You use it as one input among several — confluence over any single screen — not as a green light on its own.

Where Level 2 Fits the MTC Alignment Engine

Level 2 is a Reaction-phase tool. It doesn’t set your levels — you do that from structure, in advance. What Level 2 does is help you read how price is reacting at those levels: is size defending your support, or melting away as sellers press through it?

A trader who opens Level 2 with no pre-marked level is doing what we call “screen hypnosis” — reacting to every flicker of size, chasing walls, getting faked out. The order book is genuinely useful, but only as confirmation of a plan you already made. Structure first, order book second.

Level 2 helps you read the Reaction phase — how size behaves at a level you set during Bias and Level. On its own, with no level, it’s just flickering noise you’ll chase.

The Bottom Line on Level 2

Level 2 market data is one of the most useful and most misunderstood tools an active trader has. Used well, it’s a real-time read on where liquidity is stacked and how it’s behaving at the levels you care about. Used badly — as a standalone signal, chasing whatever wall looks biggest — it’s a fast way to get faked out by orders designed to fool you.

The rule that keeps you honest: Level 2 is context, not a signal. Bring your level. Let the book confirm or deny it. Related reading: what is tape reading, what is order flow trading, and what is the bid-ask spread.

Educational content only. Nothing here is financial advice or a promise of results. Displayed order-book size can be misleading and is not a guarantee of future price behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Level 2 market data?

Level 2 market data is a real-time view of the order book — the layers of buy (bid) and sell (ask) orders resting at prices around the current market. Unlike Level 1, which shows only the best bid, best ask, and last trade, Level 2 shows the depth: how much size is waiting at each price. Traders use it to see where liquidity is stacked, though displayed size can be misleading.

How do you read the DOM (depth of market)?

Read the DOM by watching relationships, not raw numbers: where size is stacked relative to price, whether big orders stay and get filled or vanish as price approaches, and whether size refreshes at a level (a sign of a large working order). Pair it with the time and sales tape — Level 2 shows resting orders, the tape shows whether they’re actually trading. Confluence beats any single reading.

Can you trust the size shown on Level 2?

Not blindly. Displayed size is an intention, not a commitment. Iceberg orders hide their true size, algorithmic orders pull and re-post in milliseconds, and spoofing (illegal, but its effects linger) creates fake walls. A large order can disappear the instant price tests it. That’s why “follow the big orders” is not a strategy — Level 2 is one input among several, best used to confirm a level you already identified.
